WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN (WIC)

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides nutrition information, healthy foods and referrals for other services. The purpose of the program is to help keep women, and their children under five, healthy and strong. Hillcrest administers the WIC program in the six Iowa counties of Dubuque, Jackson, Delaware, Clinton, Jones and Cedar.

WIC staff will:

  • Do a health screening for eligible participants.
  • Check the participant's diet and review their health history to determine eligibility.
  • Give advice to help the participant's family stay healthy.
  • Issue WIC checks for food and show participants how to use them.
Participants are offered:
  • Nutrition and health information
  • Breastfeeding support
  • Referrals for other services
  • Checks for healthy foods

Specific income guidelines, nutrition risks and residence determine eligibility for the program. Participants must be pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a child under five years of age, have a nutritional need, and have a household income that is less than or equal to the income guidelines. Mothers, fathers, guardians or foster parents may apply for their children. The program is available to everyone without regard to race, color, age, sex, national origin, handicap, creed, religion or political affiliation.
