Anti-Tobacco Program
The Anti-Tobacco Program is funded through the Dubuque County Health Department, the Tobacco Partnership Grant Holder. We are located at the Hillcrest Family Services Health Clinic in Dubuque, Iowa. We provide education, training, information, and support services for schools, community and youth groups, workplaces, eating establishments, and health organizations.
- The Anti-Tobacco Coalition is currently working to pass a local control resolution for the city of Dubuque. If state legislators pass this legislation, Dubuque will have local determination over the implementation of smoke-free environments. New members are always welcome.
- According to the American Lung Association, cigarettes contain over 4,800 chemical compounds, 69 of which are known to cause cancer.
- Smoking costs the United States over $167 billion each year in health-care costs.
- According to the Iowa Department of Education, every year 4,200 Iowans under the age of 18 become new, daily smokers. Twenty-two percent (37,100) of high school youth currently smoke and 14.9% (25,100) of all male high school students use smokeless tobacco. The tobacco industry spends $15.4 billion dollars annually on marketing with an estimated $192.1 million spent in Iowa. These campaigns seem to have special appeal to young people (age 12-17) as 83% of young smokers report that they use the three most heavily advertised brands: Marlboro, Camel, and Newport.
- Quitline Iowa program is a FREE smoking cessation program for persons attempting to quit. Call 1-800-822-6879.
