Title:Youth Educator (part time)
Status:Non-Exempt
Purpose:To function as an integral member of a team by serving as a role model, parental figure, and educator to youth in an after school program.
Qualifications:High school diploma or equivalent, 18 years of age. Human Service and/or teaching experience are a plus.
Reportability:The Youth Educator reports to and is directly accountable to the Community Helath Education Manager.
Scope:The Youth Educator (level 2) will assist a group of 8 young adults, ages 12-18, in an after school program, at the YMCA/YWCA. Youth educators will teach on various topics to raise self esteem and enhance decision making of participants. Program topics will include: nutrition, exercise, art, self expression, STDs, alcohol and drugs, service learning, and various other topics. This voluntary after school program will consist of forty youth who will be referred to the program by school nurses, guidance counselors, police officers, probation officers, human service agencies and others. This is a twelve hour a week part-time position. Ten hours a week consist of the after school program held on Monday and Wednesday from 2:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. and every third Thursday from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. The program is held until the end of the school year.
Skills:The Youth Educator must have the ability and personality characteristics to establish and maintain a supportive relationship with each participant. It is important that this individual evidence the strength, judgment, and maturity to effectively control the participants. The Youth Educator must possess the written and verbal skills to effectively communicate with his/her co-workers and the youth in the program. The Youth Educator must have the motivation and energy to interact with the youth in a variety of settings and enthusiastically participate in activities chosen by the program supervisor.
Relationships:The Youth Educator must establish and maintain open lines of communication with all educators, supervisors, administrative and support staff within the agency. The Youth Educator will be responsible for carrying out the directions of the program supervisor. It is also important that the Youth Educator conduct themselves professionally when dealing with individuals outside the organization during the course of their work. It is essential that the Youth Educator treat the participants, his/her colleagues and other professionals with dignity and respect at all times.
Principle Responsibilities:
1. To stimulate and encourage attainment of each participant’s educational goals.
a. To work with participants as a group and individually in activities as assigned by the program supervisor.
b. To establish a positive working relationship with the participants.
c. To guide participants in problem solving as needed.
d. To provide written/verbal input concerning each participant’s progress in the program as requested.

2. To know and understand policies and procedures and to participate in the adherence of these policies.
a. To ensure that the youth understand and follow the policies.
b. To be responsible for implementation of disciplinary action as necessary.
c. To document all incidents on the appropriate written form.

3. To help the participants cultivate appropriate social, behavioral and interpersonal skills.
a. To set and enforce firm behavioral limits for the participants.
b. To guide and instruct the participants in the development of problem solving skills.

4. To complete all clerical duties as assigned by the program supervisor.
a. To complete the daily log, individual logs, significant events sheet and other forms of documentation in an accurate and timely manner.

5. To accompany and assist the program supervisor during educational activities.
a. To supervise, assist and instruct the participants on such events.
b. To provide transportation for the participants, using agency vehicles, for such events.

6. To accept responsibility for the physical care, cleanliness and upkeep of the facility.
a. To report all damage and maintenance needs in the facility to the Program Supervisor.
b. To perform routine maintenance tasks including minor housekeeping in a timely manner.

7. To maintain and promote a teamwork relationship with co-workers, supervisors, agency administrators and other professionals:
a. To respect the ideas of others.
b. To maintain program consistency.
c. To respect and follow established lines of authority.
d. To support consensus decisions and contribute to their formulation.

8. To attend all staff orientation, in-service training, conferences, workshops and other educational opportunities as assigned.
a. To complete all necessary documentation relating to attendance, certification and evaluation.
b. Present program content to other agency staff as assigned.

9. To assume other duties as assigned by the program supervisor.
a. To operate agency or personal vehicles in a safe manner consistent with agency policies and procedures.
b. To assume primary responsibility for the requisition and distribution of classroom supplies including all necessary record keeping and documentation.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires occasional bending/stooping, crouching, and kneeling. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. 40% of time spent standing, 40% of time spent walking and 20% of time spent sitting. Must have average hearing and visual acuity. It is required to have average manual dexterity and have the ability to operate vehicles. Will be required to work outside with students. May require some exposure to cleaning chemicals.
