Title:Teacher Associate - Monticello, IA
Status:Temporary Position
Purpose:To function as an integral member of the Dubuque School by assisting the classroom teacher.
Qualifications:High school diploma or equivalent, 18 years of age.
Reportability:The Teacher Associate reports to and is directly accountable to the classroom teacher to whom he/she is assigned.
Scope:This position has direct impact on all of the students in his/her assigned classroom. The Teacher Associate will also have an impact on the students and teachers in other classrooms.
Skills:The Teacher Associate must have the ability and personality characteristics to establish and maintain a supportive relationship with each student. It is important that this individual evidences the strength, judgement, and maturity to effectively control the students in the classroom setting. The Teacher Associate must possess the written and verbal skills to effectively communicate with his/her co-workers and the students in the classroom. The Teacher Associate must have the motivation and energy to interact with the students in a variety of settings and enthusiastically participate in the recreation and activities program. The Teacher Associate must have the patience to work with students who have special needs.
Relationships:The Teacher Associate is a member of the Hillcrest Schools Team. The Teacher Associate must establish and maintain open lines of communication with all teachers, principals, administrative and support staff within the agency. The Teacher Associate will be responsible for carrying out the directions of their primary classroom teacher. It is also important that the Teacher Associate conduct themselves professionally when dealing with individuals outside the organization during the course of their work. It is essential that the Teacher Associate treat the students, his/her colleagues and other professionals with dignity and respect at all times.
Principle Responsibilities:
1. To stimulate and encourage attainment of each student’s educational goals.
a. To work with students as a group and individually in activities as assigned by the teacher.
b. To establish a positive working relationship with the students.
c. To guide students in academic problem solving as needed.
d. To provide written/verbal input concerning each student’s progress in the classroom as requested.

2. To know and understand educational policies and procedures and to participate in the adherence of these policies by the students.
a. To introduce and orientate new students to school policies, procedures and rules.
b. To ensure that the students understand and follow the policies.
c. To be responsible for implementation of disciplinary action as necessary.
d. To document all incidents on the appropriate written form.

3. To help the students cultivate appropriate social, behavioral and interpersonal skills.
a. To set and enforce firm behavioral limits for the students.
b. To guide and instruct the students in the development of problem solving skills.
c. To understand and implement school behavior management techniques. Examples: bank card, specific effective encouragement, teaching interaction, contracts.
d. To administer the point system in a timely and accurate manner with daily points being tallied, recorded and rewards appropriately administered.

4. To complete all clerical duties as assigned by the teacher.
a. To complete the daily log, individual logs, and significant events in an accurate and timely manner.
b. To complete necessary recordkeeping and monthly documentation.
c. To report daily attendance to main office, to complete office referrals completely, objectively and in a timely manner.

5. To ensure that the health care needs of each student are met.
a. To dispense medication when assigned and trained.
b. To communicate to the facility or parent all health related issues on each student.
c. To complete current incidents/accidents/injuries on appropriate forms.

6. To accept responsibility for the physical care, cleanliness and upkeep of the facility.
a. To report all damage and maintenance needs in the facility to Principal.
b. To perform routine maintenance tasks including minor housekeeping, in a timely manner.
c. To supervise students completing routine housekeeping tasks.

7. To maintain and promote a teamwork relationship with co-workers, supervisors, residential facilities, agency administrators and other professionals.
a. To respect the ideas of others.
b. To maintain program consistency.
c. To respect and follow established lines of authority.
d. To support consensus decisions and contribute to their formulation.
e. To maintain confidentiality.

8. To attend all staff orientation, in-service training, conferences, workshops and other educational opportunities as assigned.
a. To complete all necessary documentation relating to attendance, certification and evaluation.
b. To present program content to other agency staff as assigned.
c. To actively participate and attend weekly team meetings.

9. To assume other duties as assigned by the teacher or Principal.
a. To operate agency or personal vehicles in a safe manner consistent with agency policies and procedures.
b. To supervise and assist teachers during off-campus educational activities.
c. To assume primary responsibility for the requisition and distribution of classroom supplies including all necessary record keeping and documentation.
d. To provide transportation for the students for such events, using agency vehicles.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires occasional bending/stooping, crouching, and kneeling. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. 40% of time spent standing, 40% of time spent walking and 20% of time spent sitting. Must have average hearing and visual acuity. Is required to use a phone, operate vehicles, and have average manual dexterity. May be required to work outside with clients. May require some exposure to cleaning chemicals.
