| Purpose: | To function as an integral member of the Dubuque School by assisting the classroom teacher. |
| Qualifications: | High school diploma or equivalent, 18 years of age. |
| Reportability: | The Teacher Associate reports to and is directly accountable to the classroom teacher to whom he/she is assigned. |
| Scope: | This position has direct impact on all of the students in his/her assigned classroom. The Teacher Associate will also have an impact on the students and teachers in other classrooms. |
| Skills: | The Teacher Associate must have the ability and personality characteristics to establish and maintain a supportive relationship with each student. It is important that this individual evidences the strength, judgement, and maturity to effectively control the students in the classroom setting. The Teacher Associate must possess the written and verbal skills to effectively communicate with his/her co-workers and the students in the classroom. The Teacher Associate must have the motivation and energy to interact with the students in a variety of settings and enthusiastically participate in the recreation and activities program. The Teacher Associate must have the patience to work with students who have special needs. |
| Relationships: | The Teacher Associate is a member of the Hillcrest Schools Team. The Teacher Associate must establish and maintain open lines of communication with all teachers, principals, administrative and support staff within the agency. The Teacher Associate will be responsible for carrying out the directions of their primary classroom teacher. It is also important that the Teacher Associate conduct themselves professionally when dealing with individuals outside the organization during the course of their work. It is essential that the Teacher Associate treat the students, his/her colleagues and other professionals with dignity and respect at all times. |
| Principle Responsibilities: | |
| 1. To stimulate and encourage attainment of each student’s educational goals.
a. To work with students as a group and individually in activities as assigned by the teacher. b. To establish a positive working relationship with the students. c. To guide students in academic problem solving as needed. d. To provide written/verbal input concerning each student’s progress in the classroom as requested. 2. To know and understand educational policies and procedures and to participate in the adherence of these policies by the students.
3. To help the students cultivate appropriate social, behavioral and interpersonal skills.
4. To complete all clerical duties as assigned by the teacher.
5. To ensure that the health care needs of each student are met.
6. To accept responsibility for the physical care, cleanliness and upkeep of the facility.
7. To maintain and promote a teamwork relationship with co-workers, supervisors, residential facilities, agency administrators and other professionals.
8. To attend all staff orientation, in-service training, conferences, workshops and other educational opportunities as assigned.
9. To assume other duties as assigned by the teacher or Principal.

| Physical Requirements: | |
| This position requires occasional bending/stooping, crouching, and kneeling. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. 40% of time spent standing, 40% of time spent walking and 20% of time spent sitting. Must have average hearing and visual acuity. Is required to use a phone, operate vehicles, and have average manual dexterity. May be required to work outside with clients. May require some exposure to cleaning chemicals.
