Title:Mental Health Tech (Ottumwa)
Status:Non-Exempt
Purpose:To provide in-house case coordination and treatment planning as well as to serve as a role model, teacher, and counselor for the residential consumer so that they will be able to live as independently as possible.
Qualifications:A high school diploma or equivalency is required. Experience working with adults who have chronic mental illness is preferred. Must be able to drive agency vehicles, so the individual must have a valid Iowa driver’s license and must have or be able to obtain auto insurance. Must successfully complete an employment physical prior to contact with clients.
Reportability:The Mental Health Tech reports to and is directly accountable to the Facility Social Worker.
Scope:This position has impact on the residents served by the program, their families, staff and other professionals in the community.
Skills:The Mental Health Tech must possess knowledge of chronic mental illnesses and behavioral and rehabilitation theories. The Mental Health Tech must posses strong written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to utilize community resources. This position requires excellent time management, organization and flexibility. The person in this position is expected to communicate clearly, tactfully and professionally. The person in this position must be skilled in handling crisis situations and consulting with supervisory staff to resolve crises.
Relationships:The Mental Health Tech is a member of the facility team and will develop and maintain professional relationships with clients, staff, funding source personnel, families of consumers, and other professionals or community members who have an impact on the consumers who we serve.
Principle Responsibilities:
1. To provide case coordination for each resident.
a. To serve as a primary worker for clients as assigned.
b. To follow the individualized treatment plan and provide feedback via casenotes of progress toward this plan.
c. To assist in obtaining appropriate community resources or services for each client.
d. To attend all training as required and supply documentation of training for personnel files.
e. To handle additional responsibilities, as assigned, for all clients; and to assume all other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

2. To maintain a complete and updated clinical record for each assigned client.
a. To adhere to all licensing, regulatory and agency guidelines.
b. To document significant information in each file in a clear and timely manner.
c. To assure program treatment plans and IPP’s are updated on a quarterly basis.

3. To provide individualized and group skill building for residents.
a. To teach necessary problem solving and independent living skills.
b. To assist with social recreation activities within the facility and the community.
c. To provide transportation for clients as needed by adhering to all traffic laws and ensure that clients comply as well.

4. To provide a safe and welcome living environment for residents.
a. To immediately correct safety hazards or to report them to Supervisor or maintenance as appropriate.
b. To assist in the daily upkeep of the facility including housekeeping and supplies.
c. To assist in meal preparation and maintaining a safe kitchen.

5. To participate in a multi-disciplinary team in providing treatment for clients.
a. To communicate with and coordinate services with other treatment providers when appropriate.
b. To attend and actively participate in team meetings.
c. To schedule staffing for primary clients, as required.

6. To be available for shift coverage and crisis resolution as needed.
a. To provide on call coverage for crisis situations as needed.
b. To share in weekend and holiday coverage as scheduled.
c. To coordinate additional community treatment services, as needed.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires occasional bending/stooping, crouching, and kneeling. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. 30 % of time spent standing, 30% of time spent walking and 40% of time spent sitting. Must have average hearing and visual acuity. Is required to be able to use a phone, operate vehicles, and have average manual dexterity. May require some exposure to cleaning chemicals.
