Volunteers are available to come talk to your group about the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Iowa program, please contact Anne Hedrick at 563-583-7357 or anne.hedrick@hillcrest-fs.org for information.
Since 1997, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Iowa (BBBS) has made a difference in the lives of children and youth in our community. BBBS matches young people (Littles) with adult volunteer (Bigs) to build long-term, one-to-one relationships. Volunteer mentors provide friendship, emotional support and hope to young people. Each match is supported by professional staff.
Our service area includes Dubuque, Jackson, Clayton and Allamakee counties. We are an affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America which has been matching children since 1904.
Research shows that children with a Big Brother or Big Sister are more confident in their school work performance, less likely to skip school, less likely to begin using illegal drugs and alcohol and get along better with their families.
Making Connections in Our Programs
BBBS offers the following programs to meet the needs of volunteer time and interests:
Community-based program: Adults (18 and older) and children (5-15) meet at the locations of their choice to share activities they enjoy (fishing, playing board games, going to movies, hiking or playing catch). We ask for a one year commitment and a minimum of four hours a month. BBBS partners with businesses, colleges and organization to offer activities and opportunities to meet other Bigs and Littles.
School-based program: Volunteers (adult and older students) meet with children at one of the participating area schools for an hour, once a week, for focused activities including reading, educational games, art activities, physical activity or conversation. This is a good fit for busy individuals who may participate during lunch.
Mentoring Children of Prisoners: This program, in collaboration with Search Institute and the Council on Crime and Justice, enables mentors to provide friendship, positive support and guidance to children with an incarcerated caregiver.
Big Couples Match: Volunteers partner with co-worker, sibling, spouse, or friend to mentor a young person.
